Accordingly DrikPanchang makes sure that Ashtami should prevail at least for one Ghati after Pradosh while selecting fasting day for Kalashtami. Otherwise Kalashtami fasting day is moved to previous day when Ashtami Tithi is more likely to prevail during night.

Kaal Bhairav Ashtami
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, also known as Maha Kala Bhairava Jayanthi or Kaal Bhairav Ashtami is believed to be the appearance day of Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. It is observed on the 8th day during the Krishna Paksha in the month of Margashirsha in North Indian calendars. In 2010 Kaal Bhairav Jayanti date is November 28th in traditional Hindu calendar.
Kaal Bhairav Ashtami is dedicated to Lord Shiva and on this day he is worshipped as Kaal Bhairav is the God of Time. Kaal means ‘time’ and ‘Bhairav’ the manifestation of Shiva. All krishna paksha ashtamis are dedicated to Bhairav ji, but out of the 12 krishna ashtamis in a year, the one which falls in the month of Margashirsha is very auspicious. It is believed that on this day, Lord Kala Bhairav appeared on Earth.
Kaal bhairav is a terrific manifestation of Lord Shiva. He is the protector of the pious city "Kaashi" (Varanasi). He is worshiped by the tantrik cult and is considered to be an easy to please deity. In Astrology he is worshiped for the pacification of Rahu and Shani. All Devi sadhaks have to worship him and take permission from him before they actually start there Devi sadhana.
The legend or the story of Kaalbhairav and his divine avatar is mentioned in the Shiva Maha Purana. Legend has it that Lord Shiva cut the fifth head of Lord Brahma on this day and performed penance. In this form Shiva is believed to punish the sinners. Another Myth is that once a controversy arose among Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma that who was the greatest of them. Lord Shiva, infuriated by a chance remark of Brahma, took the form of Kaal Bhairav and cut off one of the faces of Lord Brahma.
Devotees of Lord Shiva observe special prayers and rituals on this occasion. On this day, Lord Kaal Bhairav is worshipped in all temples and his vehicle dog is fed with milk and sweets. Fasting undertaken on this day is considered to wash away all sins and save one from the havoc of time. This day is beneficial for Tantra puja, Security puja, Kalsarpa puja, Black magic removing puja, Shakti puja. Pitra dosha nivarana puja, Sharddha.Kaal Bhairav is pleased with deep daan. Chant the following mantra while worshiping Kaal Bhairava :
Om hreem kaal bhairavaye hreem namah

Kaal Bhairav Jayanti Kaal Bhairav Ashtami, also known as Bhairavashtami, Bhairava Jayanti, Kala-Bhairava Ashtami and Kala-Bhairava Jayanti is a Hindu holy day commemorating the birthday of Bhairava, a fearsome and wrathful manifestation of the god Shiva. It falls on the eighth lunar day in the fortnight of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. By both schemes, Bhairava Ashtami falls on the same day in November–December. The name Kalashtami is sometimes used to refer to this day, but might also refer to any ashtami in Krishna paksha, all of which are sacred days of Bhairava, who is also called also Dandapani and he rides a dog he is also known as Swaswa meaning "whose horse is a dog". Legend Bhairava is an manifestation of Shiva's wrath. According to the legend narrated on the occasion, the Trimurti gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were talking in a serious mood as to who was superior of them all. In the heated debate, Shiva felt slighted by remarks made by Brahma and instructed his ganor Bhairava to cut of one of Brahma’s five heads. Bhairava followed Shiva’s orders and one head of Brahma was cut off and thus he became four headed. Instilled with fear, all others prayed to Shiva and Bhairava. Another slightly modified version is that when Brahma insulted Shiva, Bhairava appeared from the angry Shiva's forehead and severed Brahma's head, leaving him with only four heads. The head of Brahma stuck to Bhairava's left palm due to the sin of killing Brahma, the most learned Brahmin – Brahmahatya or Brahminicide. To expiate the sin of brahmahatya, Bhairava had to perform the vow of a Kapali: wandering the world as a naked beggar with the skull of the slain as his begging bowl. Bhairava's sin is finally expiated when he reaches the holy city of Varanasi, where a temple dedicated to him still exists. Practices An all-night vigil is observed on Bhairava Ashtami with prayers, worship and tales of Bhairava, Shiva and Parvati being told. In the midnight, an arati of Bhairava should be performed with conches, bells and drums. After taking a bath in the morning, devotees, especially Shiva-worshipping Shaivas offer libations and oblations to their dead ancestors. Then, Bhairava, Shiva, Shiva's consort Parvati and Bhairava's vahana, the dog, is worshipped with flowers and sweets. Dogs are also offered milk, sweets, curds and other food as offerings. The day is considered holier if Bhairava Ashtami falls on a Sunday or a Tuesday, sacred weekdays dedicated to Bhairava. Bhairava is specifically worshipped for success, wealth, health and obstacle removal. A devotee is said to be freed of sin and the fear of death by observing Bhairava Ashtami. Bhairava Ashtami is observed in Bhairav Prasad Temple in Vaishno Devi hills in Kashmir. On this day, an image of Kala-Bhairava is made in gold or silver and immersed in a brass metal pot filled with water and worshipped with all scriptural prayers, as is done to Shiva. Then, the priests who do the puja are offered gifts. In Varanasi, an eight-day pilgrimage of the eight temples dedicated to Ashta Bhairava, eight subsidiary aspects of Bhairava, is undertaken on the first eight days of the fortnight, culminating with Bhairava Ashtami. On Bhairava Ashtami, Kala Bhairava, the city's guardian deity, is worshipped in his temple. For the rest of a year, a cloth covers the central icon, except his face, however on this day, the cloth is removed to reveal the whole image. The image is adorned with a garland of silver skulls on this day.

It is also believed that all the wishes of the devotee gets fulfilled by worshipping Bhairav nath if done with full faith and dedication. It is considered fruitful to observe fasts and worship Lord Bhairav with proper rituals on the day of Bhairav ashtami. According to the Shastras, worshipping Kaalbhairav on this day gives desired results. Lord Bhairav nath has the knowledge of tantra-mantra and is himself a Rudra. Shivapurana has mentioned Bhairav as another form of Lord Shiva. He is the one who created and nurtures the universe. The one who comes under his shelter gets relief from all the sufferings in life. Bhairav nath always protects his devotees. Bhairav Ashtmi Katha As per the legends, once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma argued about being more powerful than one another. The argument heated up to such a level that Lord Shiva had to organize a meeting comprising of saints, scholars etc. to reach to a conclusion. When the results were declared, Lord Vishnu accepted but Lord Brahma insulted Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva could not bear this insult and took a destructive form. He appeared in the manifestation of Lord Bhairav riding on a black dog carrying and carrying a danda. Therefore, he is also known by the name of “Dandadhipati”. This horrifying form of Lord Shiva terrified the demigods. Seeing the terrified form of Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma realised his mistake and apologized to him. On being endured by all the gods, saints and Lord Brahma himself, Lord Shiva calmed down. Bhairava Ashtami Pooja Vidhi People should worship Lord Bhairav nath with proper rituals and full faith. Jaagran should be performed at night to worship Lord Bhairav nath along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Katha and kirtans should also be performed. It is utmost important to recite Bhairav katha while performing the puja. At the middle of the night, the devotee should perform Bhairav aarti with conch, drum, gong etc. Lord Bhairav nath rides a black dog. So one should offer food to a dog to please Lord Bhairav nath. Take a bath in a river or a lake early in the morning and perform shraadh and tarpan for your dead ancestors followed by worshipping Lord Bhairav nath. The one who performs the puja and observes a fast gets relief from all the sufferings and fears related to ghosts, evil spirits also go away. The person gets successful in every work performed with dedication and is protected by every kind of disease. Significance Of Bhairava Ashtami Goddess Kalika is also worshipped along with Lord Bhairav nath on this day. Goddess Kali is worshipped in the same manner as Goddess Durga on the saptami of navratri. Worshipping Lord Bhairav brings peace and harmony in the family, maintains health of the family members and protects them from getting affected by various diseases. By reading Bhairav tantrokta, Batuk Bhairav kawach, Kaal Bhairav Strot, Batuk Bhairav Brahma kawach etc., one gets relief from all sorts of troubles. The devotee gets freedom from all inauspicious deeds and ends the malefic effect of planets.
