PUNE: The Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat will be observing Grahak Din (or Consumer Day) on December 24 at the Patrakar Bhavan, Navi Peth. There will also be a talk conducted on toll charges by Pritesh Lad. The Panchayat solves around 25 consumer-related cases every month.
"The Consumer Protection Act enacted in the country in 1986, completes 25 years this year. Toll is an issue wherein large sums of money are collected across the state from consumers without them getting the benefit of good roads," said member-consultant Shrikant Joshi, at a press conference on Thursday. "Based on the information that we have, the statistics pertaining to the frequency of vehicles for toll are manipulated by the toll authorities. Also, the money thus collected as toll is converted into black money by manipulating records," said Joshi. The Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat will be filing a writ petition regarding the absence of standardisation in toll charges across the country. "We will be filing a writ petition in the Bombay High Court in January 2012. We need to have standardised toll charges across the country, for instance, people have to pay ten times the toll charges in Maharashtra than those in a state like Gujarat," Joshi said. The writ petition will be supported by organisations like Shetkari Sanghatna, Warkari Sampraday and some others in the state. Apart from a talk on toll charges, there will be other talks on the nexus between local administration and the builders by member-consultant, Vijay Sagar and on 'The Alert Consumer' by member-consultant, Vilas Lele.

India, 24th December is observed as “National Consumer Rights Day”. It aims at celebrating solidarity within the national consumer movement and providing better protection of consumers’ interests. Every individual is a consumer, regardless of occupation, age, gender, community or religious association. This year the theme proposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs is "Consumers! Discharge your Responsibilities: Assert your Rights" which clearly means 'there cannot be rights without responsibilities”. Consumer Rights under Consumer Rights Act: The rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 flow from the rights enshrined in Articles 14 to 19 of the Constitution of India. The Right to Information Act (RTI), which has opened up governance processes of our country to the common public, also has far-reaching implications for consumer protection. Right to Information: To know the quality, quantity, weight and the price of goods/services being paid for, so that one is not cheated by unfair trade practices. Right to Choose: To be assured, wherever possible, access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices. Right to be Heard: To be heard and to be assured that the interest would receive due consideration at appropriate fora. Right to Seek Redressal: To seek legal redressal against unfair or restrictive trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers. Right to Consumer Education: To have access to consumer education. Some Important Advisories for Consumers: Always insist for receipt, warranty and guaranty cards etc. at the time of purchase. Check the manufacturing and expiry date of the product. Check the MRP printed on the product. You may bargain on the price. Check the brand name, name of the manufacturing company which must tally with the booklet provided. Do not sign any blank form blindly. Retain a photocopy of filled up form duly signed. Your telephone can not remain dead for more than three working days. The companies otherwise are required to credit your bill with rental rebate as a penalty (e.g. if connection remain dead for more than 3 days, rebate has to be given for 7 days rental).
